Set in the near future, Akira Mizutame, an exceptionally talented young scientist who created Salt, a robot designed to aid individuals in their everyday activities, finds himself at a standstill following a string of unsuccessful inventions. When a friend proposes that he could enhance his personal life by designing a girlfriend, he constructs an artificial companion, "No. 0," who essentially becomes his girlfriend. Caught between her programmed emotions and her own developing feelings, No. 0 experiences an emotional struggle.
